Famous African American
Quinn has to do a report on a famous African American for school. It's been interesting because he's never really paid attention to skin color... hair has always been his descriptive reference. After a discussion on the history of skin color, he comes up with some great ideas all on his own...
First it was Barack Obama. Good but I thought he could be a bit more creative. Next choice was Martin Luther King Jr. Again, not the most original. The next choice was Aarthy. So we go on a tangent conversation about how she doesn't really meet the criteria for two reasons. He reluctantly accepted the fact that she's not famous... yet ("but she might be one day..."). So we move on and he picks Michael Jackson... and he's not budging on this one: "He was the best dancer and singer ever".
So we spent some time on the computer looking up answers to Quinn's questions...
did you know he had 9 brothers and sisters?
that he won 15 grammy's?
He obviously had 3 kids, so I ask Quinn if he knew what kind of kids he had. Quinn looks up with a puzzled face "two brown and one tan?". Oh my, not exactly what I was going for...
We'll see how his presentation goes tomorrow. But I think the assignment accomplished it's goal. It's increased his awareness, hopefully in a good way.
